On September 21st, Western University of Health Sciences, College of Pharmacy, celebrated its annual Legislative Day. CSHP collaborated with fellow student organizations NCPA, Kappa Psi, AMCP and APhA to bring the latest legislative updates to our student pharmacists.
Student pharmacist Tricia Tahara-Stoller helped MC the event and both respectfully introduced the guest speakers as well as entertained and engaged the audience throughout the event. The event was a great success with over 300 students attending. We had the pleasure of having the president of the California Board of Pharmacy Victor Law, who gave the opening remarks and set the tone for the entire event. Our guest panel consisted of knowledgeable and experienced professionals: Jon Roth, Dr. Ken Thai, Dr. Robert Stein, and Dr. Brian Wong who wonderfully highlighted the importance of student involvement in legislative affairs. Some of the important topics discussed during the event were the “Importance of a Three-Pronged Legislative Affair Program”, “AB315 and the Need for Great Oversight and Control over PBM”, “Governmental Affairs Advisory Committee” and “Safety and Counterfeit Medication Concerns with Drug Importation”. Students were able to learn that their voice matters and that it can play a huge role in pharmacy law and regulations – something that can only be possible if they take an active role in the future of their profession. This event would not be possible without the help of our generous sponsors: San Fernando Valley Society of Health-System Pharmacists – SFVSHP, Orange County Society of Health System Pharmacists – OCSHP, Inland Empire Society of Health-System Pharmacists – ISHP, Greater Los Angeles Pharmacist Association, San Gabriel Valley Pharmacist Association, and El Monte Pharmacy.
